Shouldn’t You Be Doing Something Else?

I’m coming down to the wire on getting Bento published, and at the moment I’m taking a breath to write this blog post. I am waiting for my editor to finish the book. I am opening up accounts at Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks. I updated my photo and bio for Amazon and Goodreads.

Yesterday my second short story was published. Here’s the link:

It’s a tie-in piece for Bento highlighting one of the characters who the story doesn’t center around but whom I still love. My friend and business partner pointed out the all-call and suggested it. I took time off of Bento to do that, as well.

This is the part of being a writer that is by far the hardest. Prioritizing. You can’t be a writer if you don’t write. However, every other detail that you must do to get a book edited and published is like writing a second novel on top of the first. I love being an indie author. I was so intimidated to write because my fear of rejection of the publishing companies was SO OVERWHELMING. For years, I didn’t write a sentence that wasn’t an email. The access to put my stuff out on the market and have the readers decide if I’m marketable is empowering. I’ve finished two books since 2009. Technically three but that was a bit of an experimentation and education for me, not a good work to publish. And that’s something to think about as well. I may not be the best judge of my own work, but I took my experimental novel to a professional editor who did her best to save it. I spent $400.00 on it and it won’t see the light of day. It was at best, barely salvageable, and I’m okay with leaving it in the trunk. I want to show you all the best that I have.

And that is why I’m writing a blog post when I could be opening an iBooks account. Writers gonna write. I did not get into this for the minutia. I got into this to share stories and start conversations. I wanted to meet other like-minded people who are struggling to get their feet under them. The struggle is to balance the work with the play. Or turn the work into play, which is by far my favorite method.

It gives me the will to face another website.
